Review: Paradigm Busters Reveal the Real You by Marilyn Redmond

The book’s premise is wonderful – change your life and live the true you. There are many excellent pointers in the book to help you achieve that goal. Each chapter ends with questions to help you along your journey to this end goal.

I particularly enjoyed the first chapter where the author shared her story and her parents (what she knew of their stories anyways). This set up the reader to understand why the author wrote this book and how she is a true expert on the topic (beyond her education).

There were parts in the book that I disagreed with for my life (e.g., that medications stop you from finding your true self). However, that does not discredit the book’s other helpful and insightful aspects. The reader can pinpoint the critical elements that the author portrays because they repeat throughout the book. Hearing (or reading) the same thing a few times helps sink that information into your brain.

REVIEW: Mafia Princess by Khadijah L. Wynter

Who said a woman couldn’t run the mafia? It isn’t often seen in the media, and I am glad that someone finally gave it a shot. The author did a wonderful job grabbing my attention in the first few paragraphs and kept me reading. It is an easy but intriguing read, and I finished it in two days because I couldn’t put it down. There was never a lull in the action.

The author did an amazing job at integrating two narratives by identifying the character as part of the chapter title. This gave the insight that was needed from both leads while still keeping the first-person narrative, which I truly enjoyed.

The main character is a badass woman (a mafia princess) who takes charge. The other major players in the book include some who don’t care for her ways and others who they inspire. Throughout the story, she doesn’t bend to the will of others, but she does learn to work with them.

If you like strong female leads, then this is a must-read. I think there is more in the works from this author and this mafia princess.

REVIEW: Gone Said the Vulture by David Nemeth

Unlike most things that I review, this is a screenplay, and the film is still in production. Being one of the first to know the whole story is very exciting, but don’t worry, I won’t give you any spoilers. What I will give you is my honest opinion of the screenplay as a whole.

I could picture the story vividly as David set the scenes. Most of the story takes place in the desert with the heat and animals that you would expect. The character development through the story is evident and the growth realistic. In the beginning, I was pulled in wanting to know more about why the main character was in the desert. As much as I prefer the heat, I wouldn’t just wander around the desert.

The nice thing about the screenplay is that it keeps you guessing what is really happening. It isn’t until the end that all of the pieces finally fall together. Once that happens, it is easy to understand the motivations behind the characters.

Once the film is completed, I would love to see how it turns out because I enjoyed the script. I suggested that everyone take a moment to watch it once available. It is more than a clever story. There is a message behind it that we need to remember.

Review: Nanagin by Haley Kilgour

I got sucked into this book right from the start. There was no preamble, and the story got moving from page one, which I enjoyed. From there, we got to know many of the central characters and could see the power dynamics that would take place throughout the book. As the book progressed, we met the rest of the main characters and many other secondary characters. The author does a great joBook Coverb of giving life to the secondary characters just as well as the leading group.

There were times that I felt like I was watching a movie instead of simply reading a book as I was transported into a different world. There was enough description to visualize each setting without going overboard. I became invested in the quest taking place, and with each turn of events, I wanted to know more.

The build-up was immense in the final chapters (don’t worry, no real spoilers), and I couldn’t put the book down. Even though there was strategically placed foreshadowing when the twist happened, it was still had to take. The only downside I had while reading the book was the last page – ‘To be continued.’ I wanted to know what happens next, but I will need to impatiently wait until the next book is released.
