Review: Death in Halfmoon Bay by Erik D’Souza

Synopsis (taken from Amazon)

A twisted act of love, relentless politics, and multiple poisonings pit neighbour against neighbour in what was once a serene, West Coast retirement community. From the beginning, Suzanne Rickson is confident that her nemesis, Regina Snow, has murdered the HOA treasurer. All she has to do is prove it.
When a rumour re-surfaces that her husband was having an affair with the deceased, Suzanne realizes that everyone, including the police, considers her the prime suspect. Can Suzanne establish her own innocence as evidence is rapidly pilling up against her?

Review

This was a fun mystery that kept me wanting more. The story is filled with rumours and gossip, and there are several suspicious characters along the way. Set in a retirement community, I can really picture the old ladies sitting around the Mahjong table, gossiping and speculating about who did it.

One of my favourite parts of the book was the dog and the important role he played in the characters’ lives. It added personality to the story and made several scenes even more enjoyable, because who doesn’t want to use walking their dog as a cover to look for clues?

Just when I thought everything had been figured out, the author included a nice little twist near the end. Best of all, the mystery was wrapped up perfectly, with all the loose ends tied together in a satisfying conclusion.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with plenty of engaging characters and a few surprises, this is the book for you.
